Happy Friday, everyone! We’ve made it to another Poetry Friday celebration!
Each year, school librarian and Poetry Friday contributor Jone Rush MacCulloch hosts a Poetry Program in which her creative students write and illustrate poems on postcards which are sent out to happy poetry lovers.
I was delighted to discover this little treasure in my mail box, nestled in among the grocery store flyers and dentist visit reminders:
Well done, Penny! I love the imagery here – so many senses in play, with some pretty imaginative descriptions. Can’t you just picture the harried writer typing away on their typewriter in a motel room, with a pencil tucked behind their ear and bubble gum in their mouth?
This is such a fun project, and it was so lovely to find such an imaginative surprise in the mail! A big thank you to Jone for putting this all together.
Have a great weekend!
I received something like this in my mail a few years ago. I love how alive this is, i could actually visualize ‘imaginative’ typing in a motel.
Me too! There’s a story there, just waiting to be written!
Thanks so much for sharing this! It’s a perfect mentor poem to share today with my fourth grade writers.
Wonderful!!
Imaginative is white like a blank page or empty canvas, waiting for someone to come along! What a treat to find in your mailbox.
Absolutely! All we seem to get these days is advertisements, since even our bills come online now. It’s such a nice surprise to actually find something special like this in the mail.
It is a wonderful surprise to find those postcards from Jone’s students. This a wonderful image-filled poem from Penny.
It was perfectly timed – I’ve been working on some writing myself, so it was lovely to receive some encouragement in a way from a fellow writer.
Mmm…the smell of pencil lead…and freshly sharpened pencils…Yes! Bring on the Imaginative!
Absolutely! There’s nothing quite like a freshly sharpened pencil to get the creative juices flowing!
It was such a joy to receive my postcard a few weeks ago. I do agree that Penny has created a vivid image of imagination.
It’s so lovely to get a poem in the mail!!
What a treat in your mailbox! Thanks for sharing Penny’s imaginative poem.
You’re very welcome – it was such a treat indeed!
What a sweet treat.
Indeed! A bubble-gum flavoured treat!
I adore receiving Joan’s treats in the mail. This one is imaginative, Jane. I love your Poetry Friday image at the top.
Thank you! That’s how I think of poetry – like a soothing cup of tea for my soul.
I do enjoy receiving those poetry postcards. Such a great project!
It really is!
Penny nails it! I wish I had her clarity when I was in the sixth grade. Thanks for sharing this.
Me too!
Thanks for sharing your lovely surprise! I too think its a great mentor poem.
I agree completely!
This is wonderful! I love how Penny sets the scene and describes “imaginative” with such vivid detail.
Such creativity! A budding writer, to be sure.
I can only imagine there is a story behind that motel reference. I hope Penny C. writes it some day!
I was thinking the same thing! Furiously writing while chewing bubble gum!
So great! Yes, I can imagine the scene and pace of this writer. A welcome surprise in your mailbox indeed!
I’d love to do more like this – it’s such a lovely surprise to actually get something personal in the mail these days!
Lovely! And I love the gentle nod to the necessity of cupcakes, in the illustration. Another key ‘ingredient’ for creativity.
Oh, absolutely! Nothing like a sweet treat to get the creativity flowing!
Love seeing what young folks come up with when they have the opportunity to contemplate the world around them!
Wow! I’m picturing Imagination as an author, who’s taken a vacation from his or her family and is holed up in a motel with only the typewriter for company. This is such a vivid portrait.
