Friday is absolutely one of the best days of the week – not only does it mark the end of the work week and the start of the weekend, it’s also the day when writers and bloggers come together to share, explore and celebrate poetry!
This week I’m so excited to share with you a beautiful new books that many of you have probably already had the opportunity to enjoy – Laura Purdie Salas‘ If You Were the Moon.
I was sent an ARC by Laura in exchange for a completely unbiased review, which I am more than happy to provide.
A little girl wishes that she could be just like the moon. The moon just gets to sit around doing nothing – what an easy, relaxing life the moon must have!
The moon, of course, does so much more than simply hang in the sky, and young readers are introduced to the moon’s many responsibilities through a blend of gentle verse and informational text.
It’s so much fun and so inspiring when authors blend together elements of different genres, especially when they cross genres that have traditionally been kept separate. By combining a picture book, poetry and nonfiction together, Salas creates something that can be enjoyed by children, caregivers and educators in a number of different settings. The simple poetry is perfect for sharing at bedtime, while the informational text is ideal for exploring with older children.
And in the tradition of the very best nonfiction, If You Were the Moon includes a glossary and a list of recommended reads for further study.
Sweet, fun and educational, If You Were the Moon is a lovely early informational text for curious young readers. A big thank you to Laurie Purdie Salas for allowing me to share this lovely book, and keep an eye out for If You Were the Moon when it arrives in March!
Yes, this is such a beautiful book! The moon is busy in that sky… plus I love the whale illustration page best of all. 🙂
Isn’t it wonderful? I love the way the illustrations just complement the text so well. 🙂
What a great review of a beautiful book! Whenever I really stop and gaze at the moon, especially when it is full, I think of how everyone who has ever lived on the earth has looked at that same moon.
Isn’t that incredible? We’re linked to all who have come before us, and all who will come after us. Quite an inspiring thought.
I have not read this book yet, but it is in the cart! I love the illustration of this moon – I just want to reach up and kiss its cheek! I am looking forward to seeing the Snow Moon tonight!
The illustrations are so charming, and match the text so well. Our dear moon is hidden behind the clouds these days – can’t wait to see her again when the weather clears!
Looking forward to seeing this one! Thanks for featuring it today. 🙂
You’re very welcome, hope you enjoy it!
This book sounds amazing. I’m looking forward to reading it myself one day!
I hope you enjoy it too! 🙂
I’m drawn to how friendly and approachable this book is, and that sweet, playful moon—what’s not to love? Hooray for Laura!
I’m looking forward to reading this! Thanks for sharing, Jane…and congratulations, Laura!
Looks like a great book for moon-obsessed kids. 🙂
This book is on my list for sure! I adore the moon. To use Brenda’s words, I am a moon-obsessed writer for sure!
Thank you, Jane! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for all the nice comments, everyone:>) David Ingram, I think about that same thing.
Thank you for letting me have an early glimpse – so happy to share this one! 🙂
I am so excited to see another review of Laura’s book. Each time I read one, I want to add it to my library to read aloud to children. Tonight with the moon so bright, Laura’s book would be a fitting one to read.
I am a moon watcher so I can’t wait for my copy of IF YOU WERE THE MOON to arrive! Laura is such a talented writer, I know it’s going to be beautiful!
I shared this on Wednesday, Jane, and what a wonderful day to share it with that beautiful full moon tonight. It is a lovely book, and thanks for your great review.
I too love a book that blends the best of things into one glorious read.
Thanks for the sneak peek! I can’t wait to get my own copy!!
Beautiful review, Jane, thanks – and thanks to Laura for sharing too. Congratulations on what’s going to be a much-loved book! Swoon-worthy. :0)
Oh goody oh goody oh goody! Our 2nd grade curriculum includes a lengthy moon change-over-time project and this will be a PERFECT book to bring in. Thanks, Jane, for the highlight!
Oh, this will be perfect!
Man, this book just has it all! I adore the illustrations especially, but the rest just screams WINNER! Thanks for sharing this post at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com this week!
