Such a sad true story! I was taking my Crock Pot out of the cupboard earlier this week, with visions of smoky slow-cooked pulled pork dancing in my head, when the glass lid slipped off and smashed into a million pieces on the kitchen floor! You can best believe I’ll be picking up a replacement this weekend – I simply can’t function without a slow cooker! At least I was able to celebrate my beloved Crock Pot and memorialise forever it in verse.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Ugh, broken glass! Drives me crazy. I’m glad you got this poem out of it, though. (The only thing I make with my crock pot is applesauce. You’re making me think I really should use it more!)
We bought the slow cooker years ago, and for far too long it sat in the cupboard collecting dust. We finally gave ourselves an ultimatum that if we didn’t use it, it would get donated, so I borrowed a bunch of cookbooks from the library, and now I cannot live without it! It’s so perfect if you work all day, because you can pop it on as you step out the door and come home to dinner!!
Sorry! But it’s such fun to make a poem out of those “tragic” circumstances, Jane. I hope that lid will be found easily and quickly.
Sometimes you just have to laugh, right? Of course this all happened in the morning before work, so I wasn’t nearly as sanguine about it at the time, but later on I just had to laugh – darn my butterfingers!! 🙂
Oh no! Your pulled pork dream shattered – literally! I love that you took a tragedy and made it a poetic delight for us, Jane. I will make sure to handle my slow cooker with care – thanks for the cautionary tale. =)
Learn from my mistakes!! 🙂
You just have to laugh at life’s little inconveniences, right? 🙂
Oh no! I’m in a long-term, deeply passionate, completely monogamous relationship with my slow cooker, so I’m not sure what I would have done under the circumstances. It really is how we survive, especially during fall/winter. Wishing you a speedy replacement! 😉
Oh yes, going through the cold season without my slow cooker would be inconceivable! Actually, we love it in the summer too, when it’s too hot to turn on the oven. I will admit I shed a few tears, especially when I realised that the glass had flown absolutely EVERYWHERE in my kitchen…Thankfully I have a very patient partner who’s a master at helping me clean up. 🙂
Oh no! Poor crock pot cover. I’m glad you wrote some kind words to immortalize your favorite appliance. A new one will be nice too. Happy cooking! 🙂
My poor old slow cooker, such a reliable kitchen workhouse, I just had to give it a fitting farewell. And you’re right, I can treat myself to a shiny new model, so there’s always a silver lining! 🙂
Well, I’m glad you salvaged that poem–and it’s beautifully in one piece. I have two crockpots–one old one, rather on the small side, and a big one that’s perfect for family dinners. They are a kitchen necessity at our house too.
Sometimes, when life gives you lemons (or tiny shards of glass all over your kitchen floor), you just have to turn it into poetry! 🙂 My mother-in-law has a wonderful little crockpot from the 1970s that’s still ticking, and that always comes out every holiday to make sauce!
My crock pot is chipped and scarred, but I will not, cannot not, shall not, ever give it up. Without tears. I have a roast in the fridge destined for mine. 🙂
Give your crock pot a hug for me, you never know what the future might hold! Or just don’t store it in the cupboard on an upper shelf. 🙂 Enjoy your roast!!
Oh no….My crockpot (or should I say pots) are quite necessary in my kitchen. I will be filling one of them with chicken and lemon and veggies for dinner tonight.
Oh, sounds delicious!! I shall be replacing my crockpot ASAP, so I can keep making easy breezy meals!!
It served you well!
It certainly did! It took a while to get the hang of, but once I discovered all the delicious things I could make in my slow cooker (especially since I’m not much of a cook), I was hooked!
Aww…poor dear Crock Pot! Your ode is so sweet. Hope the new one lives up to your expectations!!
LOL! What a fun ode. I’m sorry to see SO many splinters of glass on your kitchen floor. But, I do love your reaction to it….to be creative! You are my kind of librarian 😉 I hope by now, you’ve picked up a new slow cooker …. or a well loved and trusty slow cooker from a goodwill store (sometimes they are the BEST finds). I’m now hungry. What will you make first? Pulled pork?
I am with you, Jane. We love our slow cooker! When our kids were heavily into sports, making a big slow cooker recipe on Sundays mean we didn’t have to rely on take-out during busy practice nights.
If you have not already disposed of your lidless crock, check the manufacturer’s website. I was able to get a new lid for just over $10 and now I have TWO crock pots 🙂
