Diverse Kids Lit – August 2017

Our theme for this #DiverseKidLit is socioeconomic diversity. Kids from all economic brackets should be able to find themselves in books – as well as to learn about the lives of others in different economic situations. (As always, the theme is only a suggestion. Diverse posts on alternate topics are always welcome.)

I recently reviewed the perfect picture book for this month’s theme. Still a Family tells the story of a young girl who lives with her mother in a homeless shelter, while her father lives in another shelter. It’s a respectful, loving celebration of a family experiencing hard times, which never resorts to moralizing or easy, unrealistic happy endings. What Is #DiverseKidLit?

Diverse Children’s Books is a book-sharing meme designed to promote the reading and writing of children’s books that feature diverse characters. This community embraces all kinds of diversity including (and certainly not limited to) diverse, inclusive, multicultural, and global books for children of all backgrounds.
