Harriet the tortoise likes to do things slowly. She explores her home on the Galápagos Islands—slowly. She eats—slowly. And when the sun goes down, she slumbers deeply all night long.
When Harriet’s friends tell her to pick up the pace, Harriet decides to journey to a neighboring island to see what there is to see. She parades with penguins and rides with dolphins, encountering adventure at every turn. But is life in the fast lane right for a tortoise who loves to take her time?
To quote everyone’s favourite slacker, “life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Modern life seems to be moving ever faster, as our schedules become more and more congested with responsibilities, activities and events. Kids in particular are so often scheduled at an almost unbearable pace, hardly able to slow down long enough to take a breath.
Take Your Time is a sweet little story about making and taking time. Harriet the turtle does everything at her own pace, which is to say she takes her time. She still has adventures, and she does try new things, but in the end, she’s happy with herself, and lives life her own way. All the different animals Harriet meets walk, swim and fly in their own way and at their own speed, and that’s just the way it should be.
There really isn’t too much of a plot to Take Your Time, but the illustrations alone make this an absolute must-see. The colours and the details are really something delightful – don’t you just want to dive into that blue sea?!
Beautifully illustrated and with a sweet protagonist, Take Your Time is a perfect picture book for a cold winter’s day!
