When I was a child, I was dubbed the “barking seal” on account of my very loud and very forceful cough.
Alas, the barking seal tends to make an appearance every winter, and double alas, it seems to have returned for the second time this winter!
In the spirit of trying to make the best of things, I have decided to turn my chest-achingly dramatic cough into a source of poetic inspiration.
I humbly present to you a haiku in honour of my winter cough.
Have a great and hopefully cough-free week, everyone!
Clever poem, gorgeous pic, but here’s hoping that you feel better soon!
Thanks so much!! When life gives you lemons, turn them into hot lemon ginger tea with honey and write a poem. 😉
LOL. I’m sorry….I wish your misfortune was not so funny in haiku form. But, the photo and the text just made me laugh. Drink lots of honey-lemon tea and feel better soon.
That’s my plan! With a bit of ginger to spice things up! 🙂
That was me, Jane! I was called the barking seal because I had croup All. The. Time! Is there room for two in your enclosure at the zoo?
Absolutely! We’ll have a ball drinking endless mugs of hot lemon ginger tea with lemon! 🙂
Jane, I love that you found a bit of humor in the situation. That photo is priceless. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Sometimes you just have to laugh, right? 🙂
Yikes, that ‘seal’ has not returned this year, but I know what you mean. Sorry and hope you’re better soon.
Clever response to a not-fun-at-all condition. Hope you feel much better soon!
I hope that the coughing subsides quickly!
Me (and my partner) definitely hope so too! 🙂
Oh, that photo with those big eyes! I hope for your sake that your cough calms. It’s no fun coughing.
We have seals in the sea where I live, it’s such a thrill to spot them just off the beach! Those eyes just melt my heart!
Humor is good for the soul and I hope for your cough. Seriously, poetry came from a cough so I am glad that you turned the illness into asset. Be well.
It so is! Sometimes you just have to laugh at life, especially the parts of it that you can’t do much about. 🙂
Oh, dear! I had to laugh out loud at your haiku and the perfect accompanying photo. So sorry that you’re suffering though and hope you’re feeling less seal-like soon!
Me too….and my significant other would definitely like to not have to sleep in the spare room anymore! 😉
Sorry about your cough but nice haiku! 🙂 Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
Inspiration can be found in the strangest of places sometimes! 🙂
Way to make lemonade!
Sometimes it’s all you can do, right? 🙂
Jane this is a marvelous haiku, it would make a great picture book too! It reminds me of Kafka and his “Metamorphosis.” I too have a big cough sometimes, I hope yours calms down, the dryness is hard on it. Hot water seems to help mine as does steam and a tropical rainforest environment, thanks. Love the seal pic also!
It’s been a pretty rubbish winter all around – turns out I’ve been feeling so poorly because I have the flu for the first time since I was a kid! Time for plenty of hot water and a humidifier! 🙂
Fun poem and adorable picture. Get well quickly!
Thank you! Here’s hoping! 🙂
Oh can I sympathize! I had bronchitis all the time as a child, which now that I’m older I realize was probably just an allergic reaction of cats! Nice senryu response to your youth!
Oh yes, my dad and I both had terrible cat allergies AND asthma, but despite my mum’s common sense arguments we both just had to have a pet cat! Not the smartest plan, but we were both just cat people!
