The Raincity Software Engineer and I try and make time for some daily pre-bed reading to help us wind down from our busy lives. Last night the Raincity Software Engineer’s reading material had him laughing so hard that his eyes were watering. With a resounding recommendation like that, I just knew I had to share his current read here on the blog!
The Raincity Software Engineer has appeared on the blog before several times before, and previously shared one of his favourite reads, an engaging nonfiction title. This time around he’s reading a fantasy title by one of our mutual favourites, the incredible Terry Pratchett.
Koom Valley? That was where the trolls ambushed the dwarfs, or the dwarfs ambushed the trolls. It was far away. It was a long time ago.
But if he doesn’t solve the murder of just one dwarf, Commander Sam Vimes of Ankh-Morpork City Watch is going to see it fought again, right outside his office.
With his beloved Watch crumbling around him and war-drums sounding, he must unravel every clue, outwit every assassin and brave any darkness to find the solution. And darkness is following him.
Oh . . . and at six o’clock every day, without fail, with no excuses, he must go home to read ‘Where’s My Cow?’, with all the right farmyard noises, to his little boy.
There are some things you have to do.
To quote the Raincity Software Engineer, “this book is so funny!” Terry Pratchett has an incredibly wicked sense of humour. He manages to blend social satire, classic fantasy tropes, witty wordplay and silly physical humour with an incredible amount of heart. His worlds are richly realized, and his characters are unique and amazing individuals that you just can’t wait to revisit.
THUD! is the seventh title in the City Watch series, so readers have had plenty of opportunities to get to know Sam Vines and the other beloved characters of the City Watch.
The Raincity Software Engineer is a long-time fan of classic fantasy literature, and appreciates the loving way in which Pratchett spoofs and sends up fantasy tropes. Pratchett teases fantasy lovers and gently mocks their favourite stories, but as a fellow fan who shares their love of the genre.
If you’re looking for a great series filled with memorable characters, twisty-turny plots and laugh-out-loud humour in an imaginative fantasy setting, definitely give THUD! a try!
I adore the City Watch books–my favorite Pratchett titles, I think–but I’ve never read this one. Off to place a hold on it.
Fantastic!! Always happy to spread the bookish love. 😀
