Rain is a common theme here on Raincity Librarian (hence the blog name) – I’ve written poems about rain, and I’ve shared rain-themed booklists. Heck, I even wrote a picture book all about making the most of a rainy day! So, it should come as no surprise that, as the rainy season hits full swing, rain continues to be a continuing source of inspiration.
I’m sad to say that this poem was not based on a true story, though I wish it was – I certainly didn’t feel much like rolling out of my warm bed on this gusty, blustery, sodden day.
Alas I also don’t have a rooftop for rain to dance on anymore – there’s currently about 14 stories of concrete standing between me and the rooftop. I do remember staying in a rented house on holiday years ago and listening to the dancing raindrops as they lulled us to sleep, warm and cozy in the knowledge that we didn’t have to leave the house the next morning unless we wanted to!
You’d think that after 32 years in this rainy city I’d be used to the endless rain, but until then, at least I can always count on it for creative inspiration!
My neck of the woods was just slammed with a nor’easter that brought snow, sleet and freezing rain. I’m actually on a school delay right now because road conditions are so yucky. So, your delightful poem becomes my reality. Thank you!
I wish you a getaway to fall asleep to or wake up to a party on the roof.
How different our climates are, Jane. If we had rain like that, I think I would dance on the rooftop. Like you, however, it wouldn’t be easy to get up on my roof! I love that ending! I feel like that when we have very cold weather!
We got sleet, snow and rain yesterday! Too early for winter to come knocking. Your poem reminded me of my childhood home, where I did enjoy the sound of raindrops dancing on our roof. 🙂
We love going to sleep to the rain on our metal roof during the summer. It does get loud at times! I like your poem.
We had rain in all its forms this week–liquid, ice and snow. I do love the sound of rain on the roof. My grandmother had a tin roof on her house, and those raindrops did dance on it. Now I have to hang out in the barn to hear it.
I’m a fan of rain drumming on the rooftop–but we’ve got snow right now!
I love your rainy poem and the “party Overhead!” I like listening to the rain pitter pattering on my window panes and would love on those mornings to stay at home with a book, sketchbook, or writing journal–ah well.
What a delightful poem! There’s nothing like the sound of rain pattering on a roof when one is warm and cozy and doesn’t need to go outside. So sorry that wasn’t your reality, but I’m glad you found some inspiration in the situation.
