Today I’m thrilled to share with you a beautiful book that’s perfect for sharing as part of Multicultural Children’s Book Day! The Shadow in the Moon by Christina Matula is a tale of the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated every autumn by people across China and around the world. The book follows a pair of happy siblings who learn from their beloved grandmother about the folk tale that inspires the much-anticipated celebration.
Ah-ma tells the girls about Chang’e, the Spirit and Lady in the Moon, whose form decorates some of the beautiful mooncakes that are a traditional Moon Festival treat. If you’re not familiar with the story, I don’t want to go into too much detail (you’ll just have to read the book!), but suffice it to say it’s a bittersweet love story with two brave, selfless lovers who make a heartfelt sacrifice to save others, and whose heroism is remembered and celebrated every year.
The Shadow in the Moon is a must-have for any school or public library collection, as it presents a popular annual celebration in a way that’s clear and simple enough for newcomers to the holiday to understand, while also staying true to the original story in a way that will delight children who already know the much-beloved legend, which is no mean feat. Pearl Law’s illustrations have an almost vintage, yet modern quality to them that helps make a centuries-old folk tale feel relatable to modern readers. AND there’s a recipe for making your very own mooncakes (though if you live in a major city like I do, you’ll likely have no shortage of options for mooncakes every autumn, as they pop up in grocery stores and bakeries everywhere)!
