In this world of uncertainty, panic and anxiety, I know these three things to be true:
- I drink a lot of tea
- I own a lot of mugs
- I am struggling to come up with content for this poor beleaguered blog.
Author Brynn Barineau (you can find her on Instagram as @bbarineau ) is challenging herself to use a different mug for her morning coffee each day of her quarantine, and the minute I saw her first post I just knew I had to jump on her mug bandwagon. I will be sharing a mug picture each day both here and on my Instagram for as long as my mug collection will allow.
Now, lest you fear that I will simply be repeating myself on both platforms, rest easy – the blog post will be an expanded version of the Instagram post, with additional blathering that will hopefully help distract you from the dire state of the world around us.
Before the bottom fell out of the world I discovered Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and went through my belongings like a whirlwind, including my extensive mug collection. The mugs that survived the great cull of 2020 are ones that truly bring me joy, and I can’t wait to share them with you.
I will also be sprinkling little tidbits about my favourite teas with you here and there, so keep your eye out for those recommendations.
And so, to kick off this project – Mug #1!
This mug perfectly encapsulates my dream home decor aesthetic – plenty of crisp white, light wood, clean lines and pops of bright primary colours. I wish there was a more interesting story behind this mug, but alas, it’s boringly straightforward. After our glass French press made a bold dash for freedom (from the kitchen counter top…), we ordered from Amazon a ceramic set that included a French press and this delightful, Scandi-inspired mug. The French press has moved on to a new home, since we’ve since discovered the ease and simplicity of pour-over filter coffee, but I couldn’t part with this mug. The wooden handle is a bit worse for wear, having survived countless washings and trips through the dishwasher, but I love it no less for its chips and cracks.
What an elegant start to this project! I hope you follow along with me as I explore my mug cupboard, and if you decide to participate, consider using the hashtag #quarantinemugproject (my first ever hashtag!) so I can see all your beautiful mugs!
Stay safe, friends, and see you tomorrow!
