What’s this, you ask? A picture book post, on my blog? Who would have thought! I actually used to write a lot of picture book reviews here on Raincity Librarian, and thanks to the lovely folks at Pajama Press, I’ve got a lovely new picture book to share! Pajama Press sent me a complimentary copy of one of their newest releases, The Haircut, and I receive no compensation for writing about it, nor am I obligated in any way to share my thoughts. I just happen to think it’s cute!
The Haircut is the latest baby/toddler book from the author and illustrator pairing of Theo Heras and Renne Benoit, following their adorable books Hat On, Hat Off, Baby Cakes, and Where’s Bunny? It follows a little boy’s first trip to the barbershop with his daddy for his first big boy haircut, which is a rite of passage for many families. The text is wonderfully spare – this would be a delightful pick for a baby or toddler time, where attention spans are often limited, to say the least! Heras was a children’s librarian for 24 years, and it shows in her writing – she really knows what makes for a successful book for the littlest listeners. And as always, Benoit’s illustrations are charming – everything she creates is just the sweetest!
On a personal level, as the mother of a little boy who’s growing up more quickly than I ever could have imagined, I am so looking forward to sharing The Haircut with him to help prepare him for his first big boy haircut with his daddy! My partner, like many daddies these days, is very hands on and involved in his child’s life, and I know he will treasure their first trip to the barbershop together. Even something as mundane as getting a haircut becomes a special moment when it’s a child’s first experience! Oh, and I have a little blondie, just like the boy in the story – I swear this story could have been written just for us!
The Haircut has thick, sturdy, tear-resistant pages, with rounded corners and a padded cover, and will survive the attentions of the most, ahem, enthusiastic young readers.
Published May 25, The Haircut would make a very sweet gift for Father’s Day! Why not consider purchasing a copy from your local independent bookseller while you’re at it?
Thank you, Pajama Press, for providing me with a copy of The Haircut to share. Will I be publishing more picture book posts in the future? Why not subscribe to my blog to find out? 🙂
