All that is old is new again, or at least that’s the way it seems to be where fashion is concerned. Remember scrunchies? If you were young in the 80s or 90s, and had hair long enough to be tied back, you had scrunchies. Lots and lots of scrunchies.
Well, it seems that scrunchies are back in style, which is good news for me, because they’re also fun and easy to make for even the greenest sewer.
There are about eleventy-billion different scrunchie tutorials on the internet, in varying levels of difficulty and complexity. For my first attempt at making a scrunchie I followed a very simple, straightforward tutorial from Martha Stewart’s website.
I’d like to think my first scrunchie turned out really well! It was a pretty quick make – the longest part was turning the danged loop right side out – oh my goodness me, what a tedious process! I used a chopstick to help turn it, but it still felt like it took forever. I’ve seen people use bodkins and loop turners in different Youtube tutorials, and if I decide I want to make more of these, I might see if I can find one, because anything that can make that part of the process easier would really cut down on production time.
There are definitely some messy seams here and there, but you honestly can’t see them when the scrunchie is tied around your hair – it’s a very forgiving project, perfect for beginners.
I hope you don’t mind these non book-related posts – I’m just having so much fun (or should I say, sew much fun?) exploring this new hobby, and I hope that I can inspire you to try something new!
Can’t believe how many of these I tossed out (along with big bows on a clip) and now my teen wants to buy them!
Maybe I can encourage her to try making them instead, Fun!
Funny how all these fashions tend to go around and come around! They’re a fun and easy beginner sewing project, I definitely recommend she have a try!
