Every night, as part of our bedtime routine, we let our toddler (24 months) pick out a handful of bedtime stories. We curl up in the rocking chair and wind down before singing our lullabies and going to bed. We have a lot of books (mama is a librarian and author, remember!), so to help speed up the process a little bit we tend to curate a bookshelf in our son’s room, which we change out pretty frequently.
Posts where people share their children’s favourite books have been so helpful as we build our family library, so I thought I’d share a few of our son’s recent bedtime picks. Hopefully this will be helpful to other families as they build their own libraries!
Our son’s favourite stuffy is a very bedraggled bunny, so any book with a bunny protagonist is sure to be a firm favourite. We’re actually on our second copy of Snuggle Bunny, as the first was quite literally loved to pieces. The illustrations are absolutely adorable, and the rhyming text is very sweet. A perfect story for snuggling.
We love all of Sherri Duskey Rinker’s bedtime books, and this is the most recent addition to our collection. A fun rhyming bedtime colour concept book.
Wheels on the Bus is one of our favourite songs to sing together, and our toddler is starting to participate in the actions, which is so much fun. This is a charming little collection of songs and rhymes, some well-known and others a bit less familiar. It gets selected almost every day.
We LOVE this collection of vehicle-themed takes on Mother Goose nursery rhymes. There’s songs and rhymes about tow trucks and rocket ships and diggers and busses and more – perfect for a vehicle-obsessed toddler who just can’t get enough of everything with an engine. The collection ends with a take on Rock-a-bye Baby, making it a great way to wind down before bed. This is such a fun collection, and if your kids love things that go, I definitely recommend hunting down a copy.
