2022 is going to be a bit of a banner year for me, as I have three picture books coming out with three amazing Canadian publishing houses. One of these books, a celebration of the simple joys of a camping trip, is being brought to life by the talented team at Nimbus Publishing. Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a city I had the absolute joy of exploring back in 2018, Nimbus is the largest English-language publisher east of Toronto. They specialize in publishing works that speak to the peoples, cultures, histories and experiences of the Atlantic provinces, and produce around 55 titles per year, which is quite impressive for an independent Canadian publisher.
I was drawn to Nimbus both by the quality of their existing works, and the affinity I immediately felt for Atlantic Canada, and Nova Scotia in particular. Though my time there wasn’t nearly long enough, there’s something special that bonds people who live by and love the sea. My hometown might be on the Pacific Ocean, rather than the Atlantic, but I grew up by the water, and feel most at home in coastal places. Little known fact about me – I actually grew up sailing with my dad, who owned a teeny tiny second-hand sailboat, and sailed out of a very casual and not-at-all fancy sailing club. Though it’s been years since I was out on a sailboat, I can’t help but smile when I look at the Nimbus Publishing logo, and think about my dad all those years ago.
For your enjoyment, here’s a photo of yours truly, looking cool in Halifax back in 2018!
