I’m back with another sneak peek into WILD ABOUT CAMPING, my upcoming book with Bryanna Chapeksie and Nimbus Publishing, releasing spring/summer 2022!
Today we’re taking a glimpse at some feathered friends – a pair of elegant loons, gently bobbing in a serene lake.
An icon of the Canadian wilderness, loons quite interesting birds – did you know that there are actually five different kinds of loon, and that four of the five species of loon breed in Canada? They can be found in every province and territory, making them a truly Canadian bird. The Common Loon is found in my home province of B.C., spending the winter in coastal bays and on the ocean, and warmer months on clear, freshwater lakes and rivers.
The call of a loon is an unforgettable sound, described by John Muir as “one of the wildest and most striking of all the wilderness sounds, a strange, sad, mournful, unearthly cry, half laughing, half wailing.” The call of a loon echoing through the trees round a still lake is truly an unforgettable sound.
Have you had the joy of seeing a loon in the wild, and hearing its striking sound? What other sounds do you think typify the Canadian wilderness?
