I love library displays, but I am not very artistic. I’m always on the hunt for display ideas that are easy to make, even for someone like me, who can only draw stick people.
The sticky note wall is a perfect display for when you want fun, interactive, low-maintenance, and easy enough for even the most artistically-challenged to create!
I claim no credit for this idea – my amazing colleague Lindsey (of Jbrary fame) suggested it when I was looking something fun to do on the end of a shelf in my tiny chilren’s area, and I’m so glad she did!
I used Canva to create a simple sign asking people to write the name of their favourite book on a sticky note and stick it up on the wall. I left a small container of crayons and a pad of sticky notes on a small table beside the shelf, and put two of my own sticky notes up on the wall to get things started. That’s a real tip of mine – always provide an example for every activity you do, because are more likely to participate if they feel confident that they’re doing so “correctly”. Every once in a while I checked to make sure there was enough supplies, and to make sure no one had put up any naughty words or pictures. That was it!
Honestly, this display could NOT be any easier, and kids really seemed to get into it. It was also kind of a neat way for me to find out which books kids really seem to love. Everybody wins!
My plan is to switch up the question every month, and maybe tie it in with a seasonal theme if possible. For October, to coincide with Thanksgiving, I’ve cut out some paper leaves, and I’m asking people to “leaf” some thankfulness, and tell us what they are unbe”leaf”ably thankful for this year.
If you’re looking for more great low-maintenance projects, Jbrary recently did a post all about self-directed programs, definitely check it out!
