Authors are often advised not to read reviews of their works, and for the most part I have to agree. Reviews are entirely subjective, and authors should never let reviews, particularly negative ones, impact their self-confidence or their belief in their abilities.
Still, as a librarian, receiving positive reviews from educators, librarians and trade journals is something I can’t help but be proud of.
A big thank you to the wonderful team at CM, who volunteer their time and expertise to assess and share Canadian materials for young readers. Dave’s comments on the vocabulary aspect of ANIMALS MOVE was a lovely thing to see, as supporting vocabulary development in young children is such a passion of mine. Each word in each of my picture books is carefully and thoughtfully chosen, and while I don’t write for praise, I would be lying if I said it didn’t feel nice to be recognized for my efforts every once in a while!
Be sure to check out CM: Canadian Review of Materials if you haven’t already, they’re a fantastic resource for educators, librarians, booksellers, caregivers and anyone else who works with young people and wants to support Canadian creators and publishers.
You can pre-order ANIMALS MOVE wherever you buy books (BOOK WAREHOUSE is a personal favourite of mine!).
