Our after-school kids programs are back, and this season we’re exploring art through the lives and works of different artists.
We started with a look at the pop art movement and Andy Warhol, and made our own Warhol-inspired creations!
I used this template from Little Bins for Little Hands, who has the most amazing FREE resources for teachers, educators and parents. I did make a couple of minor adjustments to her program to make the activity a bit simpler, as my group tends to skew really young these days.
First, I didn’t use actual popsicle sticks, but rather just cut the shape out of brown construction paper.
I also had kids first cut out the entire popsicle shape, then cut off the top of the template to trace out a topping, as I found that was a bit easier for little hands. I also gave kids the options of just drawing on a topping with markers, if they’d had enough cutting practice for the day!
I also made sprinkles just cutting scraps of paper into little confetti shapes, which was a cute finishing touch.
I also printed off some examples of Warhol’s most famous paintings, and made a book display with titles about his life and his work.
I’ve found that a lot of school-age kids seem to struggle with fine motor skills, and find cutting and tracing to be a real challenge, so I’ve started incorporating more low-stakes practice into my programs. As a child once proudly told me, practice makes better!
Lots of colorful, creative fun was had by all!
A massive thanks to Little Bins for Little Hands for sharing all these great ideas for free -definitely check them out for more great art, crafts and even science ideas!
