Top Ten Tuesday is an original meme from the awesome team at The Broke and The Bookish.
January is upon us, which means it’s time to make some resolutions! Here are a few bookish resolutions that I will endeavour to keep in 2016.
- Stop dog-earing books – I have book marks. I’m a librarian. I should know better. I’m just lazy. No more excuses.
- Finish what I start – I have the attention span of a gnat. I am notorious for getting bored and not finishing books, and my bedside table is littered with the partially-consumed remains of novels.
- Branch out – I know what I like and I tend to stick to it. This year, I resolve to branch out of my comfort zone and venture into genres I typically avoid. YA fiction, I’m looking at you.
- Give ebooks another go – I tried ebooks when they first appeared on the market and I wasn’t a fan. I have a years-old Kindle that hasn’t been taken out of the box, and this year I swear to at least read a single ebook from nose to tail.
- Stop being a snob – Oprah’s Book Club? Not a chance. Celebrity author? Wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. Glowing review in People magainze? Ugh. But that was then. This year, I resolve to stop judging a book by its cover, author, or fan base, without at least giving it an honest go.
- Read around the world – The majority of the books I read are either American or British, and this year I want to expand my literary horizons and read more novels from around the world, including works in translation and literature from my own country.
- Listen to more audiobooks – I’ve always been wary of audiobooks, but I took the plunge in 2015 and downloaded my first-ever title. I spend two hours a day on transit, and on busy days I end up standing, which makes reading difficult. This year, I’m going to face my fear of rotten narrators and try more audio titles.
- Get involved – I’ve discovered an exciting world of book nerds out there on the web, and this year I resolve to get out there (virtually, of course) and get involved. As a relatively new librarian and literacy educator I’ve still got a lot to learn, and there are so many talented, inspiring writers and bloggers out there who are sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm. It’s up to me to take it advantage of it.
So there you have it, a handful of bookish resolutions that I hope will help me be a better reader, writer, blogger and librarian, or at least make my paperbacks last a little longer…! 🙂
Any of my resolutions sound familiar? What are some of your resolutions this year? Let me know in the comments below!
I love your list!! Especially #1 haha! If you’re looking for good audiobook narrators, Jim Dale is amazing! His reading of the Harry Potter series is just so fabulous. I would start there. My TTT
It’s going on the TBR list! Narrators can just make or break an audiobook experience, it’s always exciting to find one that you can really click with. Thanks for sharing this!
That is so true!
Love your list too! especially “Finish What I Start” I definitely need to take that one on.
Ha yeah, that’s the toughest one I think, there’s just so many exciting books to read, it’s hard to pick just one! 🙂 Thanks for visiting!
I always love finding fellow Canadians on these linky lists!!!
I’m with you with the ‘branching out’ but since I’ve already gotten into YA, I’ll have to pick another genre! I also need to become more involved, so here goes!! 🙂 My TTT http://hollykerr.ca/top-ten-tuesday-ten-bookish-things-resolve-2016/
I found it surprisingly easy to switch to the world of eBooks. It helps if you have a Kindle case that looks and feels like a real book!
I’ll certainly give it my best shot! The only problem is that Kindle’s don’t work with public libraries where I live, so I can only use ebooks from Amazon or in the public domain. Laaame….
Not a fan of ebooks but I love audiobooks, esp. comedic memoirs! Good list!
My TTT: http://bookclubbabe.net/2016/01/05/my-top-ten-goals-for-2016/
I’m new to both formats, so we’ll see which one I have better success with in the months to come! Both would definitely be more convenient than lugging a massive book on the train with me every day, but we’ll see if I end up missing that smell of paper. 🙂
Now I know you are from Canada. 😀
Good luck on your reading plans and resolutions this year! 🙂 I am an ebook reader but my love for ‘real’ books is never tainted! 😀
Read ebooks but keep the old, one is silver, the other gold, or something like that, right? 😀
Haha! I am loving the rhyme you have written, Jane! 😀 Yes, I think that’s it!
Great reading resolutions! I am similar to you in some ways – not a big e-book fan, either, though I have some really great books waiting on my Kindle – I finally read one of them last week on vacation. I have to admit it was very convenient to bring the Kindle instead of a stack of books!
Audiobooks are awesome – I listened to over 25 last year! I put them on my iPod and listen whil I cook, do laundry, take a walk, etc. – great way to fit in more books!
Hope you have a wonderful reading year!
Sue
Book By Book
That’s pretty much exactly why I want to branch out into these alternate formats – trying to hold on to a large book while standing on a bus on the way to work isn’t really all that enjoyable, and I love to read on planes, so it would certainly keep my luggage weight down a bit! 🙂
I love audiobooks! I just started getting into them this past year and they are wonderful. Great goals, Jane and thank you for stopping by. 🙂
Thanks for visiting, and I’m definitely encouraged to start downloading some audiobooks!
All of these goals are solid, and I’m 100% in support of #1. My advice is to find a great bookmark that you like so much you’ll want to use it instead of dog-earing. Also, as someone who reads and blogs about primarily YA fiction, I love your branching out goal. Good luck accomplishing all of these, and thanks for stopping by my TTT!
Branching out is hard! I like a lot of different genres, but I seem to get into ruts, where I’ll read a ton of nonfiction, or nothing but historical fiction. Funnily enough I’ve never been a huge YA reader, not even back when I was a “YA” (I don’t even qualify as a “new” adult any more, *tear*…)…..
YAY for audio books! I love listening to audios to and from work. And branching out can be HARD to do! But it’s always a good feeling when you step out of your zone, right?
Well, we’ll see how well I do with all these resolutions….check back in a year! 😉
Gosh, I cant believe how much I can relate with your post: 1. Gog earing GUILTY !!! 2.Not always finish what I have started because I get bored and I have tones of books read only to the middle and waiting to finish them. Well, I was like you before about the ebooks and my ebook eink reader stayed a year in the box then something happened and I cant stop using it. Plus kindle had tones of free books and some of it are not bad at all. I love to touch and smell books, but ebooks are cheaper for me and do not make clutter 🙂 🙂
Well, good luck with your resolutions. I love them so much.
Great resolutions!
If you find the right book with the right narrator then audiobooks can be really fun. If I don’t like the narrator then I won’t listen to the audiobooks. That helps with checking them out from my library, because I don’t have to worry about spending tons of money on an audiobook that I might just not even listen to if I don’t like the narrator. For me, I think narrator is the key for a good experience.
Good luck with all of your resolutions!
I completely agree, that’s always been what I’ve been most hesitant about. I always get an idea in my head of how the characters should sound, and it can be jarring if the narrator doesn’t match with my interpretation. Hurray for the library – as long as you remember to bring your books back on time, it’s a pretty great deal! 🙂
I am on the same page with the ebooks. I just love a paperback or hardback so it is so hard to open up my Kindle!
Oh me too, there’s just something so familiar and comforting about a paper book!
I used to always dismiss audiobooks but I gave them another shot about 18 months ago and got hooked. I love how I can multi-task with them.
Getting involved and branching out are great goals too and I wish you all the best with them!
Love your list!!
I need to do audiobooks. I just can’t get into them…probably because I can’t go back and check out something I want to recall. 🙂
I definitely need to branch out and read a different genre than I am used to, but I probably won’t. LOL!!
Have a great week and a great 2016!!
I will be back!!
