More collaborative art this week at Kids Club!
We’ve been having so much fun creating giant works of art to put up on the meeting room walls, so this week we made a giant tree using our hand prints as leaves! My lovely colleague drew the tree trunk for me, and the kids used coloring supplies and water colours to make the leaves.
Whenever I do an activity like this I like to make sure that the kids know they can always take their artwork home with them, rather than adding it to the collective project. I don’t want anyone feeling sad because they can’t put their hand print painting on the fridge! So, the kids made a lot more hand prints than the ones you see here, but most of them were taken home. 🙂
This project was messy, especially because a lot of my kiddos seem to be inspired by Jackson Pollock, but it’s worth a bit of extra clean up time to provide a safe, welcoming space where kids can create and experiment and express themselves.
The program is really starting to pick up momentum, which I think speaks to a real need for creative programs and spaces in our community, especially unstructured programs like this one, where kids can take the prompts and materials and run with them in their own way.
If you’re a fellow librarian or library worker, do you offer art programs in your library?
