My wee one is all about the Christmas books right now, so we’ve been borrowing Christmas books by the stack – thank goodness for libraries!
We celebrate a secular version of Christmas in my household, as we don’t identify with any particular religion. I grew up in a religious family, so my partner and I have been making new Christmas traditions together, as many of the traditions I grew up with no longer meet our needs. It’s been an interesting process, but an exciting one, as we forge our future together.
Christmas with the Mousekins – This has absolutely been the kiddo’s #1 favourite of all the books we’ve read so far, to the point that he’s upset at the thought of returning it. We might have to buy a copy for our collection! The illustrations are very sweet and comforting, and we do a lot of arts and crafts together, so A (my son) was thrilled to find all the craft project instructions sprinkled throughout the book. I don’t know what it is about this book, but it’s been requested every night since we borrowed it.
Santa’s Little Helper – Anyone else immediately think of the Simpsons? We have a lot of stuffie bunnies, and A says rabbits are his second favourite animal (after cats), so I thought this one would be more popular than it was. We read it once, and A seemed to enjoy it, but he didn’t ask for it again, so back to the library it went. A little rabbit is playing hide and seek when it accidentally hides away in Santa’s sleigh and becomes Santa’s assistant on Christmas eve. Very cute illustrations, for any fellow bunny aficionados.
Mouse’s Night Before Christmas – This is another one I thought would be a bigger bedtime hit than it was – A loved the Mousekins book so much, but apparently this adorable mouse book just didn’t pack the same emotional punch. A lonely little mouse wishes for a friend, and after helping Santa find his way through the fog, he’s granted his wish. The illustrations are absolutely charming, and the rhyming text is very sweet, but you just never know what kids are going to connect with.
Snow Bunny’s Christmas Wish – This one combines the bunny element from Santa’s Little Helper and the wish for a friend from Mouse’s Night Before Christmas, as a snow rabbit tried to get their Christmas wish list to Santa before its too late. Along the way they help other woodland creatures, making friends and answering their own Christmas wish without even realizing it. Very cute, very sweet, very soft illustrations, and I like that the bunny makes their own wish come true through their acts of kindness.
Is it all Christmas, all the time where you are??
Luckily there’s no shortage of festive books. Happy holidays to you!
So true! Every time we put out the Christmas books at work I’m amazed at just how many there are, it barely fits on our shelves, and it seems like there’s new ones coming out every year!
Happy holidays to you, too!
It’s nice to see you here, Jane, & to read of your ‘growing up’ child! (Check out The Blur!) And I love knowing his favorite Christmas books! These are all new to me. Mice & bunnies, what fun! I’ll certainly note the first one, A’s favorite! Happy Holidays to you & the family!
I hope my comment didn’t ‘really’ disappear. I’ll check back before writing again!
