It’s Spring Break where I live, and last week we celebrated with some dinosaurs! Well, not *actual* dinosaurs, but some pretty fun dinosaur-themed activities.
We started with one of my favourite dino-themed group art activities, which involves a giant dinosaur footprint! It couldn’t be easier – print off a life-sized dinosaur footprint, then have the kids trace their feet to see how many kid footprints can fit in a single dinosaur footprint! You can find the printable dinosaur footprint here.
Of course we put our finished work of art up on the meeting room wall for everyone to admire and enjoy.
I had some dinosaur colouring sheets and bookmarks available for little friends who still wanted to make art, and then I put out the highlight of the program – the dinosaur bones! My library invested in a few sets of these foam dinosaur bones for use in programs, and I wish we had even more of them, but they’re not cheap!
The kids had so much fun creating their own dinosaur skeletons, and we had a great conversation about what it might be like to be a paleontologist, trying to figure out what dinosaurs might have actually looked like, based only on a jumble of bones.
And of course you know I had an amazing dinosaur book display set up, showcasing some of our AMAZING dinosaur and prehistoric creature books.
A few kids showed up with dinosaur t-shirts on, and we had some very spirited discussions about our favourite dinosaurs – T-Rex is still the champion of kids’ hearts, even thought they’re all aware of bigger carnivorous dinosaurs. You just can’t beat the king!
I was 100% a dinosaur-obsessed kiddo, so being able to do programs like this just makes my inner child squeal with delight. Can’t wait to do more dinosaur-themed programs in the future!
