I don’t think I’ve participated in the Top Ten Tuesday world for several years now, but this week’s theme sounded like a fun opportunity to give you a sneak peek into my holds list – that is, the books I’m either on the wait list for or have requested from other branches in my library system.
This list is a real mashup of a bunch of different genres, and actually reflects the interests of two very different readers – one a 40 year old female, the other a 5 year old male. Perhaps you can guess which books are meant for which reader?
I came across this intriguing nonfiction title thanks to Linda at Teacher Dance who shared it in a IMWAYR post – I’m always discovering new-to-me books through those posts! My son loves both math and animals, so I have a feeling this one is going to be a big hit at bedtime.
My son has an egg allergy and I have a peanut and tree nut allergy, so I’m always excited to discover new recipes that allow us to enjoy the treats we love in a way that’s safe for everyone. I’ll be the first to admit I’m not much of a baker, but thankfully the two males in my household have major sweet-tooths, and will happily devour just about any baked good!
The arrival of fall means it’s officially spooky season, and I’m in the mood for some eerie, creepy, gothic horror – speaking of which, if anyone has recommendations for great atmospheric horror, please let me know in the comments!! I don’t think I’ve read anything by Shirley Jackson beyond her short story The Lottery, which we read in school. I thoroughly despised The Lottery, though in Jackson’s defence I despised most assigned reading simply on principle, so I’m not going to hold that against her.
My son is fascinated by reptiles of any kind, and while I’m not agreeing to a scaled pet any time soon (or any pet for that matter), I have agreed to at least research the potential possibility of maybe one day in the future some time adding a snake or lizard to our family. Does anyone have a pet reptile, and is there any specific kind they would recommend for first-time reptile owners? We’re leaning towards a gecko, because they’re cute and you don’t have to feed them mice, which I don’t know that my tender-hearted hubby could handle.
Another cookbook! I love cookbooks, even if I rarely actually use them for cooking. I have psoriatic arthritis, which is an inflammatory auto-immune disorder, and while I am a firm believer in medical care and treatment and have a great specialist, I’m also open to complementary therapies, in consultation with said specialist, including possible changes or additions to my diet.
I mean, do I really need to explain this one? Kiddo loves snakes!
This is a bit of an odd entry for me – I don’t think I’ve ever actually read a Western novel, though I do enjoy historical fiction. I kept seeing this older title popping up on different book blogs, and it intrigued me enough to add myself to the wait list for a copy. That’s the wonderful thing about the library, there’s no real commitment, so you can branch out of your reading comfort zone and try genres and authors you might otherwise not consider. If I give this epic Western a try and decide it’s not for me, I can simply return it to the library to be passed on to the next reader in the line – nothing lost! I’m the sort of person who happily DNFs books without a moment’s hesitation or a twinge of guilt, especially when I didn’t have to spend a penny.
And there you have it – almost ten books that I’m going to be reading this fall! Were you surprised by any of the books on this list? Could you recommend some creepy spooky reads? And as for a pet reptile – yay or nay???
Have a wonderful rest of your week, reading friends, and be sure to check out the host of Top Ten Tuesday, That Artsy Reader Girl!
That allergen-free cookbook looks great. It’s definitely not always easy!
Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.
Snakes are so cool.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
The allergen free cookbook is very interesting to me since I am struggling with some stomach issues and think it is beause I re-introduced gluten after a long hiatus from it.
Snakes..ah, yes, my 9 year old daughter loves snakes so we read a lot about them.
I just read a book out of my comfort zone and it was a western too. One by Louis L’Amour written in the style of the original author of the Hopalong Cassidy books. I think I will try another one of his books not written about Hopalong but I did enjoy the book. It was much different than anything else I read.
I hope you get all the holds you want and enjoy them!
Every time I see The Haunting of Hill House I’m reminded that I want to read it…One of these times I’ll actually do it. I hope you and your son enjoy all of these books and have a great week.

Lonesome Dove is the only western I’ve read. I struggled with the beginning, but it eventually hooked me.
