Does anyone else just love changing over the months on the calendar? There’s something so exciting about each fresh, new start, so full of promise and potential. Call me cheesy, but you have to find joy in the simple things in life, right?
Here’s an original haiku about the thrill of putting up that first page (does anyone else have a favourite pen?)
January’s here.
Fresh and new, waiting for you.
Grab your finest pen.
This week we held a “Happy Noon Year” story time at the library to celebrate the occasion – we even had a countdown to 12 o’clock noon, so our younger patrons could experience the fun, too! As I mention in that story time recap post, I completely forgot the tune to Auld Lang Syne and ended up creating my own little ditty on the spot – the tune to Frere Jacques is so versatile!
As for my family, we spent New Years Eve comforting an upset child with a painful ear infection – parenting is so glamorous sometimes. But I wouldn’t trade those cuddles for the world, especially as my son gets bigger and busier, and is more interested in making marble runs and racing his cars than snuggling with his mama! Like I said, you have to find joy in the simple things in life, even on those days when nothing seems to go as planned.
Here’s wishing everyone an absolutely wonderful 2025, full of inspiration, joy, and many simple pleasures.
Mary Lee Hahn is hosting this first Poetry Friday of the year over at A(nother) Year of Reading – let’s start 2025 off with good poetry and great people!
Cheers to the simple things! Sorry about the ear infection. They are no fun for the kid or parents. I love that you counted down to noon at the library. What a great idea! And yes, I do love turning the page to a new month. All that potential and time to work with is exciting. Happy New Year, Jane!
Happy New Year, Jane! I love that “Grab your finest pen”! And your library time sounds wonderful!
I’m definitely one of those people who has a fancy pen that they save for writing in the calendar, and for letters and cards! 😉
Happy New Year! Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com
I appreciate your haiku! I love the feeling of a new moment in time as well… it’s one of my favorite things about the Wheel of the Year. Nature is always renewing, so I get to as well.
Here’s to greeting the New Year with whatever your finest pen might look like: the one a student gave you, the one you got for HS graduation, the one from the bank, or even the one that needs a few hard scribbles to get started again!
I love page turns of all kinds, Jane — calendars, good books, resolutions. May your year be filled with all those simple, unglamorous joys of parenting!
I’m a big fan of calendars and fresh pages, so your poem resonates with me! Also, I love the idea of a “Happy Noon Year” so little ones can join in the New Year fun. Brilliant! Wishing you all good things in 2025 🙂
Jane, how nice to see you and your fresh calendar and fine pen! It looks cozy over there in the PNW…I’ve been having lots of Canadian thoughts lately as I devour my way through the Armand Gamache series. I seem to need thorough distraction from local DC realities and global calamities. Kinda makes me long for a good ol’ earache now and then. All the best for 25 to you and yours!
A lovely haiku, Jane! I also like turning the calendar page, although lately it’s been filling me with feelings of time passing by too quickly. But here we are in 2025 – may it be joyful and full of poems and stories.
Jane, I am in love with “Happy Noon Year” storytime! 🙂
Yes to fresh starts, new calendar pages, and favorite pens, Jane!
Hoping your son is healing quickly. Ear infections are no fun. 🙁 Yes to a favorite pen! I love the TUL gel pens, with a white case, black ink. I found some in my stocking this year after my supply had run low. And yes to flipping to a new month and opening a new calendar.
Jane, Motherhood is a blessing of cuddling love. May your new year days be filled with loving storytimes.
It is such an incredible blessing. While I’m excited to see where life takes my son as he grows up, I’m absolutely treasuring each and every cuddle while he’s still little enough to want them. <3
Jane, I hope your son is completely healed by now. That is so difficult to walk with them through their pains. Your happy noon year celebration was very clever!
