It’s a snowy Monday here on the normally wet coast, and the kiddos have been having a blast! It’s not expected to last very long, so we’re all having as much fun in the snow as we can.
I’ve only got a few books to share this week – as usual, I’ve been run off my feet juggling life and work, so blogging (and reading!) have unfortunately fallen by the wayside. 😉

I love this sweet little book about a determined young toad tow-truck driver whose always ready to help out, but doesn’t like having to ask for help. It’s okay to admit when things get a bit too hard, and there’s always someone willing to lend a hand, if only we make the effort to reach out. It’s now a Geisel Honor Book, too, so I’m obviously not the only one who really enjoyed it!

My son is a very reluctant reader – he insists that he isn’t ready to learn to read, though we know he can make out more than he lets on. As with talking and riding his bike, he’s unwilling to take on any new skill until he’s confident he can do it correctly.
To encourage him to at least try and read with me, I’ve been bringing home scores of “readers”, including this one, which he very much enjoyed. He’s really interested in information books, which unfortunately aren’t as easy to find as readers based on popular cartoons or movies. Thankfully there are at least a few out there that have served us well – these “Ready to Read” books from Simon & Schuster are quite good, and manage to be both accessible and informative, which is no mean feat! I’ve since placed holds on pretty much every nonfiction reader in my library’s system, so look forward to seeing a few more popping up on the blog in the next few weeks!

I regularly run a kids’ writing program at my library, and last week we covered the horror genre, in a kid-appropriate way, of course. I love Adam Rex in general, and this was a perfect read-aloud for my group – not only does it feature several famous monsters (including a wolf man, a vampire, a ghost and a witch), it also reinforces the idea that scary is subjective, and that different people find different things scary. Darth Vader, for example, isn’t afraid of monsters, but he does find children to be quite terrifying! It’s a funny book with great illustrations that young Star Wars fans in particular are sure to get a real hoot out of.
Have a great week, friends, and hopefully you’re warm and cozy, wherever you are!
I’m glad you found some good nf books for your son, Jane. It isn’t easy for sure, to find the book that’s so appealing, readers want to be sure & read it! The Adam Rex book does look good! Have a nice week this week with that snow & whatever comes your way!
Adam Rex is so funny – his books appeal to kids and grown ups. 😀 His “Nothing Rhymes with Orange” is always a favourite of mine. 😀
