It’s almost Valentines, and our lovely Poetry Friday host Linda at Teacher Dance has invited us to share some words of love this week. Who am I to say no to that?
I love hearing about how couples meet, so here’s our meet-cute: We met at the end of the first day of university, September 3, 2002, just months after turning 18, at the bus stop. We’re both turning 41 this year, and have been together ever since. I was in the arts department, he was engineering, and if not for that shared commute home, we likely never would have crossed paths. Funny tidbit – I had just graduated from an all-girls Catholic school, and I was very shy and knew very little about boys or how to talk to them. I was determined to take on a confident new persona now that I was in university, and that meant talking to boys, no matter how scary they seemed. There was an extremely cute boy ahead of me in the line up for the bus and I wanted to start up a conversation, but I had no idea how. So, I asked him if we were the right line up for the #25 bus. Friends, we were standing right beneath a sign that clearly read “#25 bus”. My future sweetheart looked at me, looked at the sign, looked back at me and said “ummmm….yes?” Bless him – if he thought I was a bit ditsy, he certainly didn’t show it!

We exchanged email addresses (this was long before texting was really a thing), and after a few days of not hearing from him I grew impatient and sent him an email asking if he wanted to attend a “back to school” BBQ event with me. He later admitted that he’d wanted to email me as soon as he got home that first day, but his friend, who believed himself to be quite the charmer, told him he had to wait so as not to seem “desperate”! Thankfully he didn’t take any more romantic advice from that friend!
We’ve weathered school, graduation, various jobs and moves, health issues, family troubles and losses, and the stresses and joys that come with parenthood. We’ve officially spent more of our lives together than apart, and I don’t know that I’d know who I am anymore without him! He’ll also never read this since he isn’t much for being online. 😉

And finally, after all that preamble, a poem about love – actually, an excerpt from one of my favourite romantic songs, Crazy She Calls Me, written by Bob Russell and Carl Sigman and performed by the one and only Nat King Cole:
….Like the wind that shakes the bough
She moves me with a smile
The difficult I’ll do right now
The impossible will take a little while
I say I’ll care forever
And I mean forever
If I have to hold up the sky
Crazy she calls me
Sure, I’m crazy
Crazy in love am I…
Are you crazy in love? I’d love to hear about your loved one(s) – love takes many forms, and I firmly believe that we can have many great loves throughout our lives, whether they’re romantic loves or not! Our dearest friends, close family, even devoted pets can be great loves of our lives, and deserve to be celebrated, too. <3
Aww! Adorable! Cheers to being crazy in love! My sweetheart and I are celebrating our 35th Valentine’s Day together! I still feel like the luckiest girl in the world. 🙂
Jane, you two are adorable together! It is wonderful to see all the joy that followed the day that you plucked up the courage to ask about the #25 bus! : )
Yes, I too am crazy in love. Married for 44 years. He says I saved him. We saved each other and are better for it. 3 childrens and 7 grandies later, I still get butterflies:) Thanks for sharing those lovely lyrics and your story.
Hi Jane, I love your love story & I loved Nat King Cole so long ago! It’s a wonderful Valentine post! I met my husband because he worked as a bus boy at my sorority house & we started talking every time he was there, & the rest is history! Happy Anniversary in a while, you lovebirds!
So sweet and you both still look so young (and happy)!
We definitely feel older – parenthood is no joke! 😉
What a sweet story! I love it!
What a sweet love story!
Thanks for sharing your love story. I met my love in college, too, but we didn’t date until after we graduated. We’re celebrating our 48th wedding anniversary this year.
Oh, how wonderful!! Every year is such a blessing.
It’s nice to hear such a happy story and what could be better than ending with lyrics sung by Nat King Cole, one of my all time favorite singers. I hope you are happy together for a very long time!
He’s always been one of my favourites – that warm, smooth voice, so swoon-worthy! <3
Jane, what a precious love story. Thank you for the “crazy in love” lyrics. The photos of young (and even younger) you two are so cute!
